I started my college adventure straight out of high school, and then I played around while working for several years trying to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. In 2011 I came back to school at the University of Utah and began my Bachelor degree in Parks Recreation and Tourism.
From the moment I had to find an internship to current day, my life has changed in wonderful ways that I never even imagined could happen. I started out my internship in afterschool programming and completed it with a permanent benefited position working with low income families. The truth is I was given the greatest opportunity to prove that I am a hard working person.
Having never worked for a nonprofit organization I learned that things are significantly different in business dynamics, such as people depend on grants for their income and grants being used to help with supporting services for the low income community.
As far as recommending future students to this internship, absolutely but I am not sure with the changes that took place in October 2013 that anyone in PRT would be able to find something related to their emphasis. I am grateful for the opportunity to intern with SLCAP/Five Parks, it has changed my life completely and I know I have great exciting opportunities ahead.
A big THANK YOU to the staff, educators and other students in the PRT program at the University of Utah!!
